Deerwood Country Club
The club was founded in 1960 and the course was designed by George Cobb. Deerwood became, over the next few decades a destination for golfers. By 1967, the club had earned the right to host the Greater Jacksonville Open (which later became THE PLAYERS Championship), a prestigious event that the club hosted from 1967-1969 and 1972-1975. In 1999, the club’s members got together and bought the club from Gate Petroleum, and Deerwood became an equity club. In 2004 the course was renovated, and the golf architect Brian Silva redid the course with 5 sets of tees ranging from 5,228 yards to 7,261 yards for the championship tees, slope of 131 and rating 73.4.
Coming from St. Augustine I took A1A up to Butler Blvd (202) and then left on 115 south, just after Gate Pkwy. After a mile or so on 115, turn left on Whippoorwill Ln and you are there. From St Augustine I would count 40 minutes, a little depending on the traffic.
We were greeted by very professional and friendly staff when we arrived. The course was in a very good condition with lots of undulations. Tee boxes were very clean and smooth so you don’t have to look for a spot to tee up. No debris or sticks on the fairways, and the bunkers were all well kept with nice sand and no small pebbles or other debris. I will go back as soon as I get an opportunity, it is a private course.
